BRANDING

Inspiration

Black Friday

The idea with the Black Friday logo was to suggest a high-tech beacon of clarity cutting through the chaos of print circulars and 4 PM Thursday store openings, a civilized "chilling at home in my Cuddl Duds with my iPad and a mug of hot chocolate" alternative to choking on dirt trying to get a Best Buy doorbuster TV in person.

Cyber Monday

Our Cyber Monday shopping collection was, to put it in highly technical business terms, a way smaller deal than the Black Friday site. This gave me the freedom to design the totally absurd logo that an event called "Cyber Monday" in 2018 deserves, taking inspiration from old computer & video game magazines, '90s cyberpunk, and, of course, the then-red hot Retro Wave meme generator.

Palette

It's been long enough since I completed this project that I honestly can't remember whether I found this image while actively moodboarding Black Friday-esque human chaos or if I just came across it while killing time on It's Nice That, but either way, it was love at first sight with the colors in this Sébastien Plassard illustration.

The dark chalky blue and ripe melon used here were so similar to a couple of secondary colors in the Brad's Deals palette that I felt pretty sure I could give the Black Friday event site a very effective different-member-of-the-same-family vibe with nothing more than a heavy injection of this groovy teal color.
